Guernsey residents urged to track alcohol intake on scratchcards

In a bid to rethink alcohol consumption, islanders will receive scorecards in the post to help them monitor their drinking habits in line with official guidelines.

The move is part of the government's Rethink Your Drink scheme, which hopes to help reduce alcohol consumption on the island, after the 2023 Wellbeing survey revealed nearly one third of islanders drink at higher than recommended levels.

Spearheaded by the Health Improvement Commission for Guernsey and Alderney, the new scheme encourages residents to write their weekly alcohol intake on scorecards and then compare the results with recommended levels.

Men and women should not drink any more than 14 units per week, spread over the course of three or more days, with at least two alcohol-free days each week, according to advice from the UK Chief Medical Officer.

Andrea Nightingale, substance use lead at the Health Improvement Commission, said the scorecard was "a simple, interactive and engaging way to help people understand their intake".
